The Ghanaian Languages Short Story Prize is a literary prize that seeks to discover and celebrate literature written in indigenous Ghanaian languages. We celebrate, support and showcase the languages and literatures of Ghana through our various initiatives. Write Ghana’s mission is to create opportunities that increase the use and representation of Ghanaian.
The premise of the Ghanaian Languages Short Story Prize is simple. There is an evident gap in the support and promotion of literature in Ghanaian languages. For instance, in East Africa, there are a host of writing prizes which promote creative writing in Swahili. In Ghana, such prizes as well as conducive environments for the creation of local language literatures are scarce. Hence, it is easier to access literature such as novels, poetry and short stories in Swahili than in Ghanaian local languages such as Ga, Twi or Ewe from Ghana. The Prize therefore seeks to encourage writing in Ghanaian languages in order to increase their representation and simultaneously contribute to their preservation. With a focus on short stories, the Prize aims to increase the visibility of literature written in Ghanaian languages in the mainstream society by awarding a literature prize to writers of short stories in Ghanaian languages.
