The
Ghana National Commission for UNESCO (Ghana Natcom) in collaboration with the UNESCO
International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement (UNESCO
ICM) will be organizing the second edition of the African Regional Congress on
Martial Arts, scheduled to take place on 25th and 26th September, 2019, here in
Accra.
The upcoming Congress in Accra, after its successful premier host by the Kenya Natcom, is expected to bring together people from academia, practitioners, students as well as stakeholders in the martial arts and the sports fraternity in Africa on the whole.
The 2nd Congress will comprise West African countries, mainly Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Ethiopia, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger as well as some Southern and Eastern African countries, i.e. Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Also in attendance will be the UNESCO Accra Office, the Korean Embassy in Ghana, KOICA and officials from some UNESCO National Commissions from neighbouring countries.
The Congress is expected to discuss the role and current status of martial arts in Africa as well as afford participants the opportunity to share country-experiences with respect to the status of martial arts, specifically the challenges faced by women and the differently-abled in martial arts.
