This day is celebrated each year on 4 March-to highlight the achievements of engineers and engineering in our modern world and improve public understanding of how engineering and technology is central to modern life and sustainable development.
This year’s celebration coincides with the launch of a new global report on Engineering entitled “ Engineering for Sustainable Development: Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals”. The Report’s five chapters analyse successively how engineering is essential to sustainability, why it should become more diverse and inclusive, which are the key innovations that will make a difference in delivering the SDGs, what engineering primary and life-long education is needed to achieve those objectives, and which are the defining engineering trends in the world’s regions.
The celebration of this year’s event begins with a high-level Opening ceremony in which the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, will jointly launch the Report with Dr. Li Xiaohong, President of Chinese Academy of Engineering (representing Tsinghua University and the International Centre of Engineering Education (ICEE), China). The Report will then be presented by the co-Chair of the Steering Committee of Report and three of the authors from the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO). We then have a round-table with young engineers from different engineering organisations, presenting their views on how engineering is essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Finally we have the closing of the event by the ADG of the Natural Science Sector, Ms. Shamila Nair-Bedouelle.
