WORLD RADIO 2020

On 13 February 2020, THE GHANA NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO joins the world in celebrating World Radio Day.

World Radio Day is a global event that is marked on the 13th of February every year. Following a UNESCO proposal, it was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2012 to coincide with the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Radio in 1946. This day is celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of radio and how it positively impacts on millions of lives every day. It is also a day to celebrate radio as a medium of communication, to improve international cooperation among broadcasters and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information and freedom of expression.

The theme for World Radio Day 2020 is ‘’Radio and Diversity’’. Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can stand as a platform for all voices to speak out, be represented, and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs and content and reflect the diversity of their audiences in their workforce and operations.

On World Radio Day, let us come together to create the necessary awareness about the importance of promoting diversity in radio, both in the workforce and broadcast at national and global level.
