On this significant occasion, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO join forces with the global community to commemorate International Day of Education 2025 under the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

During a press conference, the Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu delivered a speech highlighting this year’s International Day of Education honours AI’s role in transforming education by creating new opportunities to personalize learning, automate routine tasks, and expand access to quality education for people who have previously been marginalized and often denied it. However, it also reminds us of the critical need to preserve human agency and values in an increasingly automated world.

The Minister for Education reaffirms the ministry’s commitment to:

  1. Promoting Inclusivity: AI can bridge educational gaps by reaching rural and disadvantaged places, ensuring all children have access to quality education regardless of geography or socioeconomic position.
  2. Empowering Teachers: Teachers are the foundation of our education system. Through capacity-building programs, we hope to provide teachers with the tools and knowledge they need to design inclusive curricula, incorporate digital literacy, and teach AI ethics and critical thinking skills.
  3. Improving Infrastructure: AI in education need reliable electricity, internet access, safe and inclusive learning settings to fully realize its potential. Investment in these areas continues to be a primary priority.
  4. Building Partnerships: Collaboration is crucial for reaching our objectives.

Governments, corporate sector players, international organizations, and local communities must all work together to remove barriers and promote equitable access to education for marginalized groups, such as girls and children with disabilities.

The Ministry also understands that education is about more than just technology; it is about nourishing brains, encouraging creativity, and creating a society that cherishes equality and human potential. As such, the minister encourages all stakeholders, policymakers, educators, parents, technologists, and students to work together to advance SDG 4: Quality Education for All.

On this unique day, we honour the persistent work of teachers, parents, and communities across Ghana who continue to make education a source of hope. Let us work together to harness the potential of innovation, protect human agency, and keep education a transforming force for every child, community, and nation.
