World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development – 2021

The 40^th General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019 proclaimed the 4^th of March every year as World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development as a result of a proposal by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) for the observation of such a day.

The commemoration gives an opportunity and offers the platform to celebrate the much-needed contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable development and modern life. It is in this light that UNESCO urged Organisations, governments, civil society, the public and private sectors, schools, universities, and society, to take the opportunity offered by the day to create awareness on the contribution of engineers and engineering to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Celebration of the day also creates the opportunity for engineers to inform the world, particularly the youth who aspire to be engineers, of the impact of engineering on our society as indicated in the words of Dr. Marlene Kanga, the Past President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, who led the proposal for the day.

The Day is further used to promote engineering as a career and an opportunity to ensure that our people and planet are safe, especially achieving the UN SDGs in countries where support is most needed to ensure that everyone has access to clean water, sanitation, reliable energy, and other basic human needs.

The global theme for this year’s edition is “Engineering for A Healthy Planet: Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report”.

As part of activities marking the commemoration, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, jointly with the College of Engineering, KNUST and the Ghana Engineering Students Association (GESA) of KNUST will organize a colloquium on Tuesday, 9th March 2021.

The adapted theme for the event is “Engineering for a Healthy Planet – The Role of the Young Engineer”.

Co-chaired by the Provost of the College of Engineering and the Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, the event, which would be held both in presentia and virtual mode, will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Presentations will include:

1. Presentation on the Sustainable Development Goals – Dr. David Quansah, Snr. Lecturer, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, KNUST.
2. Presentation on theme “Engineering for a healthy planet – the role of the young engineer” – Prof. George Obeng, Dean, Faculty of Mechanical and Civil Engineering, KNUST.
3. Presentation on opportunities availed by UNESCO – Mr. Apollonius Osei-Akoto Asare, Principal Programme Officer, Ghana Commission for UNESCO.
4. Experience Sharing –  Ms. Mary Agbenyeku, PhD Student and past beneficiary of UNESCO Poland Fellowship.
