World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development – 2021
“Engineers aren’t very good at articulating the value of engineering and the impact that engineers and engineering have on society. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk about these aspects and engage the community in the work of engineers”- Dr. Marlene Kanga
The 40th General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019 proclaimed the 4th of March every year as World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development as a result of a proposal by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) for the observation of such a day.
The commemoration gives an opportunity and offers the platform to celebrate the much-needed contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable development and modern life. It is in this light that UNESCO urged Organisations, governments, civil society, the public and private sectors, schools, universities, and society, to take the opportunity offered by the day to create awareness on the contribution of engineers and engineering to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Celebration of the day also creates the opportunity for engineers to inform the world, particularly the youth who aspire to be engineers, of the impact of engineering on our society as indicated in the words of Dr. Marlene Kanga, the Past President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, who led the proposal for the day.
The Day is further used to promote engineering as a career and an opportunity to ensure that our people and planet are safe, especially achieving the UN SDGs in countries where support is most needed to ensure that everyone has access to clean water, sanitation, reliable energy, and other basic human needs.
The global theme for this year’s edition is “Engineering for A Healthy Planet: Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report”.
