Initiation as a socio-cultural practice of transmission of endogenous knowledge in Africa (12 December 2022)
On 12 December 2022, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) will host a hybrid education talk about ‘Initiation as a socio-cultural practice of transmission of endogenous knowledge in Africa’ by Ms Roukiatou Hampaté Bâ, Director of the Foundation Hampaté Bâ, Cote d’Ivoire, and daughter of writer and philosopher Amadou Hampaté Bâ.
During her presentation, Ms Hampaté Bâ will reflect on how traditional education based on initiation has long constituted a mode of education and training rooted in endogenous values and cultures in Africa. She will explain how it enabled the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next before the advent of exogenous factors.
The education talk is open to the general public.
