Protecting Ghana’s Heritage and Fostering Creativity

The Culture Sector of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) emphasizes the need to preserve culture for both individuals and societies through safeguarding historic sites, promoting creativity and artistic innovation, preserving living and intangible heritage and sustaining cultural employment and livelihoods within the creative economy.

The sector works to defend and promote these areas in 4 main ways:

  • Protecting Culture in Crisis Situation- Armed conflict and heritage, culture in emergencies, disaster risk reduction, illicit trafficking of cultural property
  • Culture adapting to Contemporary Challenges – promoting culture’s ability to contribute to the areas of Sustainable Development, Climate Action, Biodiversity, digital technologies, education, and Africa.
  • Culture as Heritage Preservation- preservation of world heritage, intangible cultural heritage, underwater cultural heritage, and memory of the world.
  • Culture for Sustainable societies – creating sustainable, inclusive and creative societies through the creative cities network, world book capital and the promotion of diversity of cultural expressions.

The sector believes respect and human dignity require acceptance of beliefs, diversity and the preservation of traditions. UNESCO accomplishes this through its intergovernmental mechanisms, the cultural conventions and other initiatives that work to strengthen the cultural and creative economy and sustainable development.

The Culture Sector in Ghana

The Ghana Commission for UNESCO advances national development by safeguarding and promoting Ghana’s cultural diversity and both tangible and intangible heritage, while ensuring alignment with UNESCO’s cultural priorities. It advises the Government of Ghana on UNESCO-related cultural policy and supports the implementation of the UNESCO Cultural Conventions ratified by the country. In collaboration with government institutions, regulatory bodies, academia, and civil society, the Commission strengthens heritage preservation, fosters creativity, and contributes to sustainable development through policy dialogue, capacity-building, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
