INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION 2021

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

In celebrating the day, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO will join other stakeholders notably the Ministry of Education, UNESCO-Ghana, UNICEF-Ghana, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), and other CSOs to commemorate the International Day of Education.

The activities slated for the day will include embarking on field visits to some schools in Accra and the presentation of a Joint Statement by stakeholders.

Again, a parallel celebration will also take place at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Central Region. Ghana Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) will organize a Youth Parliament Debate where students selected from schools in Central Region will have the opportunity to debate pertinent issues in Education that concerns them. There will also be addresses and presentations from the Central Regional Director of Ghana Education Service, (GES), Institute for Educational Planning, and Administration (IEPA), Ghana Commission for UNESCO, and GNECC.

On Monday 25^th January 2021, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO together with other stakeholders will take stock of government’s COVID-19 Education Response and Schools reopening and the successes, challenges and lessons learnt. An avenue to provide a voice to learners to share their concerns and experiences regarding COVID 19 on learning and schools reopening will be created. The team will seek to highlight commitments and follow-up actions taken to protect education through the recovery, increase inclusion and combat dropout. Furthermore, it will be a day to celebrate initiatives being led by government, educators, organizations as well as partnerships that demonstrate the potential to recommit education to the principles of equity and relevance. Finally, on the day, focus will be on giving a voice to the COVID-19 generation to express their concerns and aspirations in the face of a future marked by an economic recession and climate change.
